Defensive Doubts Mount: Koundé’s Fitness and Flick’s Plans

November 9, 2025 · Dion

As Barcelona prepare for another intense weekend, questions loom over the fitness of Jules Koundé. The French defender left training early on Friday, prompting speculation over his availability. Flick refused to give definitive answers, saying only that the medical staff will assess him “hour by hour.”

Koundé has been central to Barcelona’s improved defensive structure, forming a solid partnership with Ronald Araújo. Losing him now would be a significant blow, especially against a Celta side that thrives on quick counters and aerial pressure. Eric García, recently cleared to play with a protective mask, could step in if necessary.

The club’s medical report suggests Koundé’s issue is fatigue rather than a structural injury, but the coaching staff are reluctant to risk him with key fixtures approaching. Flick has hinted that Andreas Christensen could move centrally while Alejandro Balde and Garcia provide width in the backline.

Beyond this single match, the episode underscores the fragility of Barcelona’s depth in defence. Injuries to key figures have forced constant reshuffles this season, complicating tactical stability.

“We can’t control injuries, but we can control organisation,” Flick said. His pragmatic approach has slowly reduced errors in transition — one of last season’s biggest weaknesses. However, consistency remains the missing ingredient if Barcelona are to sustain a title challenge.

All eyes will be on Flick’s team sheet. Whether Koundé starts or not, the coach’s ability to adapt will define Barcelona’s resilience in the coming weeks.
